Women of Color Feminisms
The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's women of color feminisms certificate is for students who have a strong interest in learning about the intellectual contributions, activism, and experiences of women of color but cannot complete the requirements for a major or minor in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies.
Study the Unique Experiences of Women of Color
Courses across many fields such as history, psychology, sociology, feminist theory, and literary studies examine the systemic, interlocking structures and politics of gender, race, sexuality, class, and nation in the lives of women of color. Learn how to broaden the definition and scope of feminism, build solidarity across minoritized communities, and make feminist engagement diverse and inclusive for all.
Students interested in careers such as international education, government or civil service, social work, teaching, community-organizing and human relations may find this certificate particularly useful. The certificate is intentionally designed so that you can pick and choose the classes that are most relevant to your interests — making it an excellent addition to any major.
Program Details
Through coursework and discussion, you will better understand the lived experiences of Black, Indigenous, Asian and Pacific Islander, Chicana, Latinx women, and more—both in the U.S. and transnationally— through their work, writing, and concepts.
The majority of the women of color feminisms certificate is made up of courses chosen by you. This allows you to personalize your studies and focus on the topics that most interest you or best align with your career goals.
After completing the certificate, you will have a solid understanding of the social workings of power, privilege, and oppression across a range of cultures and experiences.
Coursework throughout the program will address the struggles, resistances and achievements of women of color across a variety of scholarly disciplines as well as community organizing, advocacy, activism, and the visual and performing arts. This critical knowledge will provide you with tools and methods for applying non-oppressive practices in your daily life.
Blugold Stories
Curriculum throughout the women of color feminisms certificate highlights the role of race and ethnicity in the formation of gender and sexuality in the experiences of women of color. Courses examine a wide range of topics including systems of power; gender and racial justice; privilege and oppression across a range of cultures and experiences; and feminist, queer, and critical race theories and methodologies.
